Pálffy, György (1909–1949)

Army officer. Pálffy was forced out of the army in 1939 for ‘anti-national’ political views and went to work for United Incandescent Lamps, where he soon became a manager. He came into contact with the communist movement. In 1944, he became head of the counter-intelligence department at the Defence Ministry, and in 1948, permanent deputy to the defence minister and head of training. He joined the Central Committee of the Hungarian Workers’ Party (MDP) in 1948. In 1949, he was arrested on fabricated charges, sentenced to death as part of the Rajk trial, and executed. He was rehabilitated partially in 1955 and wholly in 1963.
